Expanding on what James and Geoff have said...

Stephen King said there are three ways to scare folks.  The first is horror.  That would be what James mentioned with the kids sneaker or the gently rocking bassinet.  The second is terror which is the mummy jumping out of the sarcophagus and trying to grab you.  King said "If those two fail, just go for total gross-out."

Seeing pictures of a place with no signs of life to me is a neat concept to capture.

Being there, however, gives me the heebie jeebies.
