Old = 60+.  I am late middle aged.  That being said, can I help it if my musical tastes are eclectic?  Metallica, Mannstein Steamroller, Nine Inch Nails - old metal.  LambsofGod sound good and I can understand the lyrics.

I have seen two live performances of true heavy metal, Wellington's Victory and The 1812 Overture, as originally scored for musket and 6 to 12 pound cannon.  Nothing says heavy like a baton rising from the clouds of smoke, and on the down stroke a battery of heavies open up.  OK, no rounds were fired, but the sound was impressive.

TNT lead singer - Frampton hair with a 90s porn star face.  Don't like the way he prances with the mike stand.  Overly repetitive lyrics.  Is this into what metal has devolved?

Alex- Petrucci is, in fact, the man. Good choices, indeed.

But I'm in a mood for covers tonight:

Alex - it was not a solo, given that the other three members of the group were also playing, albeit with less volume.  Adequate I would call it.  Could name half a dozen I saw in one year all of whom were better.  Come to think of it, they still are, just that I cannot afford the time to travel to see them.  Can still hear them, though

Does AC/DC count as metal for you guys?  I mean, the only group to have both bagpipes and heavy duty bells...

My two cents:  The word "Adequate" really does not apply to Dream Theatre in any way.  Rush aside, they are the most gifted collection of rock musicians playing today.  While you may not like their song writting, no one can diminish their talent level.

Charlie,

In pop culture, and in most other modern culture, that is considered a solo. I would sincerely like to know half a dozen bands better than Dream Theater.

Regardless, check out the guitar "lead" and keyboard "lead" in this song (or solo for the rest of us).

Currently better or can I use the way back machine?  Not certain if they had video then, but I will check.  And being old school, I must ask you to excuse my ignrorance of the modern concept of a solo.  I'll probably post all but the AC/DC references on another thread, because although its great music, my other groups ain't Metal.

AC/DC are like the Ramones.  Very little ability, but write cool songs that will remain classics.  Simple and fun.

If we can use the way back machine, I would add Carlos Santana (esp his live album with Buddy Miles), Eric Clapton, Allman Bros (before the deaths of Dwayne and Barry - try Jessica from their 1970 tour) and if you want guitar virtuosos (not that Hendrix does not make my top five), Al Dimeola's Elegant Gypsy.  For the best jam band of all time, I can only state with the certainty of one who has heard them, that there was nothing like a live Dead concert.  Barton Hall, 8 May 1977 comes to mind and you can find a few tracks on Google.

Quags covered Clapton with Cream, but Blind Faith wasn't chopped liver either.  Springsteen and the other big ones he also hit, so that leaves Dream Theater out of the top ten for me, and I would have to listen to them a lot before I would rank them.

For pure instrumentation, try Roy Orbison's Black & White, in which he has tons of great guests.  King & Clapton's Riding with the King will let you hear two guitar greats on the same tracks and the  cover is priceless.
