Do they still use lighthouses for navigational purposes? I know the one in Negril is a park/tourist attraction.

This will not be a navigational lighthouse, but a symbolic one... the colliseum is smack in the middle of the island (north-south middle). I lent my support to it's construction, and hope it goes through; however, I can see where it might meet some resistance. Long Islanders tend to shun skyscrapers on The Island, or any large structure. People still curse at the Court House they build in Central Islip that can be seen from Fire Island. This goes back to Long Islanders (actually their parents by this time) being people who escaped the city, it's congestion and other problems. But this area has already seen the encroachment of the tall building right near it in mitchel field, so what is one more tall building?

I think lighthouses are beautiful. their construction and symbolism brings hope. I can understand how they wouldn't want large looming buildings but lighthouses are usually aesthetically pleasing. Its a work of beauty. A sign of guidance. I think it's symbolism alone is worth putting the effort into it. it's not like they're saying "hey let's make a 300 foot tall abstract art piece that looks like a bunch of mangled paper clips ll stuck together and painted some hideous color."
