This may be something to try for mods. I don't know if anyone has ever used this kind of tape, but it will hold well to mark walls or doors in the woods and it is biodegradable.

These are used to mark trails for Search and Rescue training. While it is biodegradable it is over a considerable mount of time and should still be retrieved. In the case of missing a piece it's no big deal. Comes in pink orange yellow green and blue that I have seen.
